Acer Predator ASG7710-A41 Gaming PC [Aspire G Predtor with Core i7-950 Processor and Twin NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 1GB Video Cards]

Acer is catering to gamers who demand a lot from their rigs with their latest Acer Predator ASG7710-A41 gaming PC. Just introduced on the Japanese market, the new Predator ASG7710-A41 is being powered by Intel’s 3.06GHz Core i7-950 processor, feature 6GB of DDR3 memory (and support up to 12GB of RAM), boasts twin NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 1GB video cards for extreme graphics, and Acer’s G15 gaming keyboard and G9 gaming mouse.

Along the same lines, the new Aspire G Predator hides Intel’s X58 Express chipset, a 1TB 7,200rpm SATA hard-drive, a Blu-ray drive and a multi-format memory card reader, under its orange robotic distinctive case. There are eleven USB 2.0 ports, two eSATA, four DVI-D outputs and two gigabit ethernet ports — enough to get your LAN game started smoothly.

Priced at 259,800 Yen (some $2,720 at today’s rate), we don’t have a release date for the moment and don’t know for sure if it’s going outside the Japanese borders.

THE Nokia N97 has been keenly awaited since its worldwide introduction late last year as it was touted to be the next big thing in the mobile market by many observers.

The phone is laden with features and it is bound to be a Herculean task to condense all the features and functions in one sitting so there is little space to waste.

Sliding tilter?

The first thing you will notice about this model is what Nokia officials call a “sliding-tilt” phone. This means that you push one side forward and it tilts up to give you that mini-desktop look and feel, which I personally think is excellent for all kinds of situations.

A Qwerty keyboard has always been a requirement for me as I like to feel buttons beneath my fingertips when I am typing an SMS, e-mail or URL.

This particular keyboard is a tad small for my big fingers but after a few days I was typing quite fluently. Beyond the Qwerty keyboard, the sole traditional button is the silver menu button. Side buttons include a lock button, volume control and camera toggle.

I was a little concerned about the wear and tear with the sliding-tilt hinge. Nokia have said that the hinge is made out of extremely sturdy material and that the phone has passed vigorous performance and drop tests.

I can say that it has passed my own accidental drop tests and the hinge does look and feel pretty strong.

The only real issue I had with the physical characteristics of the N97 was the back cover and battery, both of which are unrealistically hard to remove and replace.

Having tried this on a variety of people with different finger sizes and varying lengths of fingernails, I have concluded that it is near impossible to take out the battery without a prying mechanism. Tragic.

Online sensation

Built for the Internet, the Nokia N97 allocates the majority of its touchable home screen to movable and customisable widgets for quick access to your online needs.

Users are able to put their widgets in specific “rows” and there are around five rows in total. It was really useful having a link to online news and social networking sites.

Given the relative speed of fixed line broadband these days, many a time I was able to go online and check for updates faster on my mobile than on my laptop.

It is especially useful when you are on the go and need information quickly. Its always easier to prove a point or win an argument when you have Google embedded on the front screen of your phone.

It would be practical to consider a mobile broadband plan to get the most out of the Nokia N97 without slowly bleeding your wallet dry paying off the data charges.

Rocket science?

The resistive touch technology coupled with Nokia’s software makes for a very elegant combination. Navigating is by no means second nature, there are some hurdles in figuring out exactly how the web browser works.

One example is the zoom. There is a vertical tab that allows you to zoom in and out but, at least initially, you are not sure which part of the webpage it will zoom in to.

I still think that a Nokia phone is the one of the more user-friendly phones you can buy. This model has stayed true to that.

However as more and more functions get added to phones like this one, it just takes longer to find what you are looking for.

There were some bugs in the Nokia N97’s software post-release and I did experience some hanging and other minor glitches. According to Nokia officials, those imperfections were addressed in the first software update that is now available.

Wait, there is more

I took countless pictures and videos in the short time I had this phone with me. With 32GB of memory on board I never even thought about whether I had enough space for all of it.

The camera is just about as good as it gets on a phone and the video quality is quite impressive.

Given this, it was surprising that the voice recorder was not nearly as high end in terms of sound recording quality as I thought it would be. Some recordings turned out quite muffled.

The biggest disappointments were the speakers. The music output (specifically the bass) left something to be desired and you could barely make out what the other person is saying when you turn on the speakerphone at full volume.

My guess is that Nokia had packed far too much in this phone already and therefore the speakers were more of an afterthought (much like the removal process for the back cover and battery).

Conclusion

There is an inherent charm in the Nokia N97 that is inescapable. From placing it on a table and writing an SMS to surfing on a fantastically long landscape mode, it was all quite memorable as far as phones go.

Also, I thought the price was quite reasonable considering the usual trend with new releases of high-end and feature filled devices. That is not to say I consider it cheap though.

All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the phone and would recommend it to anyone looking for a powerhouse smartphone.

Pros: Unique sliding tilt; great to surf on; excellent fusion of Qwerty keyboard and touch technology.

Cons: Substandard speakers; cumbersome battery cover.

The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X2 has been in the center of attention ever since its first unofficial shots leaked online. Much like most other gadgeteers, we've had our hands itching to get one and luckily our wishes just came true.

The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X2 is one impressive device full of industry leading features - it's the first Windows Mobile smartphone with an 8 megapixel camera and WVGA video recording and it's actually the first ever full QWERTY phone to have that sort of imaging prowess as well

The XPERIA X2 most other features, though not as innovative, are a nice match as well. We guess they are worth going through one more time.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X2 at a glance:

  • General: GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz, UMTS 900/1900/2100 MHz, EDGE class 10, HSDPA, 7.2 Mbps; HSUPA, 2 Mbps
  • Form factor: Slide-and-tilt QWERTY touch phone
  • Dimensions: 110 x 54 x 16 mm, weight 155 grams
  • Display: 3.2" TFT resistive touchscreen, 800 x 480 pixels
  • Platform: Qualcomm MSM 7200 528 MHz processor
  • OS: Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.5 Professional
  • Memory: 110MB storage, 256 MB RAM, 512 MB ROM, microSD card slot
  • Camera: 8-megapixels auto-focus camera, LED flash, touch focus, geotagging, face detection, image stabilizer, Smart Contrast, WVGA@30fps video recording
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP, standard microUSB port, GPS receiver with A-GPS, 3.5mm audio jack, TV-out
  • Misc: Optical trackpad, accelerometer for motion-based gaming, office document viewer and editor, XviD video support
  • Battery: 1500 mAh Li-Po battery

We just got the XPERIA X2 and we wanted to share with you our first impressions of the device. So consider this article as a quick and dirty preview, with a more detailed one coming up in the following week. We hope to get as much as possible from our encounter with the X2 and you can bet we surely won't keep anything to ourselves.

UPDATE 8 Sept: We decided to update this article with some new stuff instead of creating a new preview as the XPERIA X2 hardly deserves any further detailing at this early stage of its development. It still has quite a few software issues that will without a doubt be fixed in the future software builds.

So today we've added a whole new page on the messaging, web browser and 3D games and we've also updated our conclusion to take the most viable market alternatives into account. We really hope to see the XPERIA X2 again for a full-blown review, once its hits the stores all nice and bug-free.

The XPERIA X2 should be available in two colors - Elegant Black and Modern Silver. There's hardly anything missing from the broad range of connectivity options. Perhaps the only two things it seems to lack are the FM radio and the automatic screen rotation. Yes, there's an accelerometer on board alright, but the screen doesn't auto rotate to match the orientation of the handset.

While the XPERIA X2 uses the vanilla Windows Mobile 6.5 Professional, the thing that sets it apart from competing products is the X-panels interface. X panels have gone a long way since the XPERIA X1 and have turned into a full featured system for using various animated and interactive homescreens. But we'll get to that further down.

Anyways, enough talking, let's get to some walking. Jump on as explore what the XPERIA X2 is made of with even a brief rundown of the interface later on.

Third Generation iPod Touch Announced

Apple, a few days ago, announced the 3rd generation iPod Touch with not much improvement over the 2nd gen iPod Touch. Sadly, Apple didn’t add a camera. However, Apple did drop the price on the iPod Touch and boosted up the storage, which is always a plus.

3rd third generation iPod Touch

New iPod Touch lineup looks like this:

  • $199USD for the 8GB model
  • $299USD for 32GB model
  • $399USD for a whopping 64GB

The 32GB and 64GB are 50% faster than previous generation models and will run OpenGL ES 2.0. Also, existing iPod Touch owners who already have the latest 3.0 firmware will also be able to download the new iPhone OS 3.1 firmware, which is already available, at no charge, while those running older firmware versions can upgrade for $4.95, which is an absolute bargain.

September 21, 2009 Apple Investigating Reports of Poor Battery Life for iPhone OS 3.1 Users

The iPhone Blog reports that Apple is taking steps to investigate numerous reports of reduced battery life from iPhone OS 3.1 users. The company’s AppleCare division has reportedly begun contacting users complaining about the problem in its support forums, asking users a series of questions about their battery life issues.

An undisclosed number of users who have posted on Apple’s discussion boards about poor battery life following the iPhone 3.1 software update are being contacted by AppleCare helpdesk with a hefty list of 11 follow-up questions. These questions focus primarily on the usual battery culprits, email (especially push), WiFi and Bluetooth, and App Store apps. Number 10, asking “When you notice a power drop, does it seem to be a legitimate power drop, or rather an issue with the battery icon indicator?”, is certainly interesting.

Battery Life Logging configuration profile Apple iPhone

Users are also being sent a “Battery Life Logging” configuration profile for installation on their devices. The configuration profile reportedly tracks battery usage data and syncs it to iTunes, where users are asked to send the data back to Apple for analysis.

LOGMEIN FOR THE IPHONE

Ever left the house or office and realized a few hours later you forgot that all important document or spreadsheet on your computer? How great would it be if you could somehow retrieve that document or presentation using your iPhone. With the help of LogMeIn Ignition, this becomes a reality.

LogMeIn itself has been around for quite a while now. Basically, what it lets you do is remote control your home or office computer from any other computer in the world. All you need is an account and once your home computer is set up, accessing it remotely is as simple as logging in through the website. The best part about this is it’s free! They do have other amazing features such as file transfer, sharing, and mini meeting. These are included in the PRO version which will cost you a bit but is well worth it in my opinion.

LogMeIn is a great thing from computer to computer, but what is even better is that now you can use it on your iPhone or iPod touch. The app works over wi-fi or 3G so wherever you are, you can access your home computer. If you’re like me, you often forget things at home. With LogMeIn Ignition, there’s no need to worry anymore. Simply email yourself the. If it’s a larger file and you have the PRO version, set up a quick sharing link. Send the link to yourself in an email and download it straight off your home computer. This also works great if you need to use a program on your home computer that you wouldn’t have access to otherwise. Even help out a friend in dire need of a little tech support. It’s that easy!

The app is very simple to use and works incredibly well. It stores all your login information so you don’t need to type in your email address and passwords every time, which could get annoying. After a few seconds to connect, your home desktop is displayed before your eyes, just the way you left it. The mouse pointer can either move around or you can have it stationary in the center of the screen while the desktop moves around behind it. I prefer the latter of the two. Almost all the functions you would expect in a normal mouse are present here and the iPhone’s multi touch screen is made use of very nicely. For instance, to click or double click, tap once or twice anywhere on the screen. Tapping, holding and dragging moves icons or selects text like a normal mouse would. Of course, pinching in or out lets you zoom. Dragging two fingers at the same time even lets you scroll!

Now I have a large couple of monitors at home and I found that the app was really sluggish at high resolution, even crashing a couple of times. However, I found If you drop it down to 800×600, performance is increased dramatically. Have multiple monitors running, no problem! Just give the device a quick shake to switch monitors.

You can install LogMeIn on as many computers as you like and have remote control access to all of them from your iPhone or touch. Everyone I show this app to is floored by what I’m doing. Makes them wish they had an iPhone or iPod touch! It is one of the more expensive apps you’ll find, but since that is all you will be paying for to remote control your computer, I think it’s well worth it! Now I can afford to be a bit forgetful. For a bit extra, the ability to file share in the PRO version is awesome. I highly recommend this if you ever need to access your computer on the go.
