iPhone Dev Team have updated PwnageTool to add support for an untethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak and additional device support. Now you’ll be able to retain your current baseband and unlock and have the wonders of an untethered jailbreak on iOS 4.2.1 — read everything carefully:
as the Chronic Dev Team revealed last week with an untether for the 4.2.1 jailbreak, which had previously been a tethered JB for most recent devices since 4.2.1’s release in November. With their permission, we’ve incorporated their 4.2.1 “feedface” untether into today’s PwnageTool 4.2. This means iPhone unlockers can safely restore to a custom 4.2.1 pre-jailbroken IPSW and retain their current baseband and unlock. PwnageTool also supports all the other 4.2.1 devices other than iPod touch 2G:
•iPhone3G
•iPhone3GS
•iPhone4
•iPhone4-Verizon
•iPod touch 3G
•iPod touch 4G
•iPad
•AppleTV 2G
PwnageTool also includes two very recent improvements to the 4.2.1 JB: iBooks was just fixed by @comex and @pushfix last night so that it works as intended on DRMed books, and the wifi problem on AppleTV 2G was fixed by @nitotv, @DHowett, and @saurik. Both of these fixes will also be available in upcoming Cydia package updates, so if you’re already jailbroken you can wait for those updates rather than restore and jailbreak again.
The various components to the 4.2.1 untether (including a second exploit involving Mach-o headers) were worked out by 0naj, posixninja, and pod2g, and a nice writeup by 0naj is available on the wiki. The actual injection method uses geohot’s limerain exploit for most devices. And even though 4.3 is just around the corner, the exploit used has already been closed in the latest 4.3 betas, so it made sense for the 4.2.1 untether to be released when it was. It also appears that a security researcher named @i0n1c has a 4.3 untether ready for when Apple releases the final 4.3 FW, so it may not be a long wait at all with 4.3!

Rumor: iPad 3 to Get 2048×1536 Retina Display
Analyst, Kuo, claims that Apple will be delivering a super high resolution Retina Display to the iPad 3.
Kuo now claims that iPad 3 will deliver a Retina Display-like quality and resolution doubling to 2048×1536, an enhancement originally thought to make it into the more immediate release of iPad 2.
The Wall Street Journal has said the 2nd generation iPad will not get a retina display. Instead, it’s believed the iPad 2 will offer a thinner and anti-reflective screen for better viewing in sunlight.
In addition, according to John Gruber iPad 3 may arrive as soon as September 2011; moving its release time frame from 1 year to 6 months — the decision on who to believe is up to you.
iPad 2 is widely expected to be released by April.

Apple Working On Smaller And Cheaper iPhone Model
It looks like the iPhone nano rumors are back.
Bloomberg is reporting that Apple is working on smaller and cheaper version of the iPhone to take on phones powered by Google’s Android.
According to the report, the smaller iPhone model could be priced at $200 without requiring a contract.
Bloomberg reports:
Apple Inc. is working on new versions of the iPhone that are aimed at slowing the advance of competing handsets based on Google Inc.'s Android software, according to people who have been briefed on the plans.
One version would be cheaper and smaller than the most recent iPhone, said a person who has seen a prototype and asked not to be identified because the plans haven't been made public. Apple also is developing technology that makes it easier to use the iPhone on multiple wireless networks, two people said.
Bloomberg claims that according to the person who saw the smaller iPhone model, the prototype was one-third smaller than the iPhone 4.
This is not the first time we’ve heard of Apple’s plan to launch a smaller iPhone, which has been dubbed as the iPhone nano. But back in January 2009, Apple’s acting CEO, Tim Cook had killed the iPhone nano rumors saying:
"You know us, we're not going to play in the low-end voice phone business. That's not who we are. That's not why we're here. We'll let somebody do that, our goal is not to be the unit share leader in the phone industry. It is to build the best phone."
Bloomberg also reports that Apple is also working on a dual-mode iPhone that will support both GSM and CDMA networks:
Apple is also working on a so-called dual-mode phone, two people said. This device would be able to work with the world’s two main wireless standards -- the global system for mobile communications, used by AT&T and overseas carriers such as Vodafone Group Plc, and code division multiple access, used by Verizon Wireless. It isn’t known whether Apple intended to include this capability in the cheaper iPhone.
The report also claims that Apple is working on built-in SIMs that would give options to customers to select the carrier of their choice at the time of purchase of the phone.
Do you think Apple enter the low-end phone business? Would you be interested in a contract-free iPhone nano? Let us know in the comments section below.

Apple May Launch iPad 2 Later This Month
Japanese blog Macotakara - which in the past has provided accurate details about forthcoming Apple launches has some interesting information regarding iPad 2.
In a two line report published recently, the blog said that Apple will be holding a small event in February to launch the next generation iPad.
However, Macotakara goes on to add that iPad 2 will be available only in March.
Meanwhile, iLounge claims that "a previously accurate source" has revealed that Apple is working on NFC (Near Field Communication) accessories, indicating that iPad 2 and iPhone 5 could come with embedded NFC chips for mobile payments.
iLounge report provides some details about the NFC accessories:
In the most basic implementation, an accessory could announce its presence and potential functions to an iPad or iPhone without the need for a Bluetooth or similar connection; our source suggests that an otherwise simple case could include a radio chip so that an inserted iPhone or iPad could go into power-saving hibernation mode automatically. More complex accessories will go far beyond that.
The iLounge report also talks about the possibility of Apple using a new material similar to carbon fiber instead of alluminium in the next generation iPad to make it tougher and at the same time reduce its weight.
iLounge also reports that according to their source, Apple has asked component manufacturers to develop a part that could be used in a 7-inch iPad, which is odd as Steve Jobs has mentioned that Apple won't make a 7-inch iPad as they believe 10-inch screen is the minimum necessary for a tablet.
Are you waiting for Apple to launch iPad 2? Would you be interested in a 7-inch iPad? Please tell us in the comments section below.
How To Jailbreak iPad On iOS 4.2.1 Using Greenpois0n [Windows]
Chronic Dev Team just released greenpois0n to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 for Windows for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, iPod Touch 4G,iPod Touch 3G and iPad.
In this guide, we will take you through the step by step procedure to jailbreak your iPad on iOS 4.2.1 using greenpois0n.
Here are some important points to note before you proceed:
- Please note that jailbreaking your iPad may void its warranty and hence proceed with caution and at your own risk.
- This guide is meant for iPad users only. for Iphone 4 check out my previous post
- Greenpois0n supports iOS 4.2.1 and iOS 4.1. So you need to first update your iPad with iOS 4.1 or iOS 4.2.1 to use greenpois0n.
- Please note that this guide is only meant for Windows users.
- Do not forget to backup your iPad before you proceed.
- Please ensure you are running latest version of iTunes, iTunes 10.1 or later.
You can follow these step-by-step instructions to jailbreak your iPad:- Go to here to download the latest version of greenpois0n.
- Double click the greenpois0n zip file to extract the file and double click greenpois0n to launch the application.
- Next connect your iPad to the computer and power it off.
- Then click on the Prepare to Jailbreak (DFU) button.
- You will be prompted to put your iPad DFU mode. Greenpois0n will take you through the necessary steps.
- Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for 2 seconds.
- Keep holding the Sleep/Wake button and also simultaneously also press and hold the Home button for 15 seconds.
- Then release the Sleep/Wake button but continue holding the Home button for 15 seconds.
- Once the iPad enters DFU mode, you should see Ready to Jailbreak, now click on the Jailbreak button.
- You should see greenpois0n jailbreaking your iPad.
- After jailbreaking is complete, you should see the Quit button, click Quit button to close the application. You should see text in verbose mode scrolling on your iPad’s screen.
- Your iPad will reboot. After it has rebooted, you’ll notice that there is a new Loader application on your iPad’s home screen.
- Tap on it to launch it. Select Cydia and then tap on Install Cydia button.
- After you have successfully installed Cydia, you can uninstall the Loader application as it is no longer required. Tap on the Options button and then Remove Loader.app button to uninstall it.
- That’s it, your iPad is successfully jailbroken and you should see Cydia on the homescreen. Reboot your iPad and launch Cydia to install the latest updates.
Troubleshooting steps:- If you don't see Cydia in the Loader app after launching it then you can install Cydia using Redsn0w 0.9.6 RC8 (download link). You should just tick Cydia from the list of options and don't use the Monte option.
- Greenpois0n recommends a clean restore so if the above steps don’t work then you can try to restore your iPad if you desperately want a jailbreak as it is not ideal.
- Connect your iPad directly to your computer (not via a USB hub).
As always, let us know how it goes and if you have a tip that helped you jailbreak your iPad using greenpois0n successfully then do share it in the comments section below. -

Greenpois0n RC5 Released! Untethered iOS 4.2.1 Jailbreak
Update #4: No more waiting for the Windows version, folks! Windows version of Greenpois0n RC5b2 has been released! Same drill, this is beta, there will be bugs and whatnot. Use at your own risk. In addition, Chronic Dev Team have updated Greenpois0n to RC5 beta 3 — Instructions below and downloads below. Enjoy!
Update #3: Chronic Dev Team has released an updated and more stable build of Greenpois0n RC5 — Greenpois0n RC5.2 — This should fix some issues for some. If you’re having issues, I suggest you try this version. Please, keep in mind that this is still beta, there will be bugs. Also, this is still for Mac OS X only. Install a Mac OS X distro such as Kalyway to use if you’re on Windows and can’t wait.
Update #2: Chronic Dev Team has released the README:
In addition, there seems to be a temporary fix if greenpois0n doesn’t work the first time; that is, hold the Home button while jailbreaking. Apparently, that’ll make the jailbreak work. I can’t confirm this.
Update: I can confirm this working via an updated (not clean restored) iPhone 4. However, It takes a great deal of patience. It’s still a beta, so there are kinks to get worked out. In addition, the Windows version should be released in a week or so. — Patience is a virtue, my friend.
Hell yeah! Just released is the much anticipated and long awaited untethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak by Chronic Dev Team — Greenpois0n RC5. As reported a few days ago, Apple closed the loophole hackers have been using up until iOS 4.3 to jailbreak.
Since it’s closed, there was no need to wait till Apple released the update, so Chronic Dev Team decided to release Greenpois0n RC5, providing a way for users to jailbeak iOS 4.2.1, untethered. This, apparently, works on all devices.
For now, this is a Mac OS X only release. Windows and Linux should be released very soon. Remember, this is an RC, so there may be random crashes and whatnot. Use, strictly, at your own risk!

Apple Releases iOS 4.3 Beta 3; Allows Users To Cancel App Downloads Mid-Way
Apple has just released the third beta version of iOS 4.3 (build 8F5166b) to developers of iOS Developer program.
iOS 4.3 beta 3 is available for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 4th generation, iPod Touch 3rd generation and iPad.The release notes does not provide any details about the changes in the new beta version.
However, folks at AppAdvice have observed that iOS 4.3 finally gives users the option to cancel downloading apps and delete them mid-way. This feature though very minor, will come in handy as I’ve been in situations where I want to cancel downloading of an app, especially when I find out it’s a large application. Earlier the only option, one had was to pause the download. The feature is not new to iOS 4.3 beta 3 but it was only noticed earlier today.
AppAdvice reports:
The feature is quite simple to use. All you have to do is enter the icon arrangement mode ("Wiggle mode") as you normally do to delete an app. This time however, you'll notice the "x" appear over the currently downloading app as well. Just hit it, confirm, and iOS will proceed to interrupt the download and delete the app.
Here are some of the features and changes that have been discovered in iOS 4.3 beta 1 and beta 2 so far:
It looks like Mobile hotspot feature that was one of the major features of the Verizon iPhone will be available for GSM iPhone users as well.
Allows users to stream videos from apps to compatible devices via AirPlay. Apple has also released AppleTV software beta that is required for AirPlay video streaming.
Add contact numbers gets new wait button
As always, we will let you know if the latest beta version of iOS 4.3 reveals any other interesting new features.

GreenPois0n RC5 Untethered 4.2.1 Jailbreak Supports All Hardware
Posted by Dan
It appears Geenpois0n RC5 will be bring an untethered jailbreak which will on all current hardware. Apple has closed the loophole hackers have been using up until iOS 4.3. Now there’s absolutely no point in waiting for the new update to be released. Pod2g confirmed that GreenPois0n will go ahead as-is and a attempt to add 4.3 support to be made later.
The good point is that because of this (and the fact that Apple fixed the kernel exploit in 4.3), we’re all working back on releasing gp.
This is great, because many of you (me included) have been desperately waiting on an untethered jailbreak for our precious devices. Equally great, this should be released not too far from now, so stay tune.
