The much awaited Apple’s “Let’s Talk iPhone” event is over. It was expected that Apple would launch the iPhone 5 and possibly the iPhone 4S, along with plenty more at this event. However, sources revealed that the iPhone 4S had finally been launched by Apple in the event with the announcement of the launch of the iOS 5 launch on October 12th.
Tim Cook, Apple’s new CEO, took to the stage, promising innovations in both software and hardware. He said that though Apple currently had 357 stores in 11 countries, the initial focus would be on new retail stores that have opened in Shanghai and Hong Kong.
With a free update on the iOS 5 launch date which is to be October 12th, he also talked about recapping all the key features. So the new iOS 5 features would include a Newsstand – for accessing magazines and books on a monthly basis in a dedicated app – a new look Camera app with a direct shortcut and more editing features, and notifications at the top of your screen, again for faster access.
Finally Apple announced the launch of the iPhone 4S. This new iPhone 4S was said to have the same look as of the iPhone 4, though it will run with the iPad’s faster A5 chip and claimed 7x faster graphics for video. It will also come with improved battery life, improved antenna, and faster data transfer. The iPhone 4S is said to be twice as fast as the iPhone 4 with respect to downloading. What’s more – the iPhone 4S has 8MP camera, redesigned lens and a new antenna system that will choose the best of two antennas depending on where you are.

iPhone Dev Team Confirms Untethered Jailbreak For iOS 4.3.1 Is ‘Solid’
We had reported couple of days back that iPhone hacking expert Stefan Esser who goes by the Twitter handle i0n1c had figured out a way to jailbreak iOS 4.3.1, which was untethered.
He had also handed over the the untethered iOS 4.3 jailbreak to iPhone Dev team so that they could test it before releasing it to users. MuscleNerd, one of the members of the iPhone Dev team has revealed that the untethered iOS 4.3.1 jailbreak is 'solid'.
MuscleNerd tweeted:
well @i0n1c’s untether is solid! Just working out overall 4.3.x JB issues and Cydia
Though MuscleNerd has not provided an ETA, based on MuscleNerd’s tweet it looks like we won’t have to wait too long for the untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3.1 for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.
Sn0wbreeze for Windows and PwnageTool for Mac with custom bundles can already jailbreakiOS 4.3.1. However, they support only a tethered jailbreak, so users have to use iBooty (Windows) or tetheredboot utility (Mac) to boot into jailbroken state if they need to reboot their iOS device.
Update 1:
This untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3.1 won't support iPad 2 as Apple has patched the jailbreak vulnerability in iOS 4.3.1.
Update 2:
It's not clear whether the untethered jailbreak will support iOS 4.3 or earlier iOS versions.
Facebook Launches New Mobile Website
Facebook has announced that it is rolling out an upgraded version of its mobile website, which it believes will bring the best mobile web experience to mobile devices.
Prior to this, Facebook had two websites: m.facebook.com for less feature-rich mobile devices, while touch.facebook.com was for touch based smartphones like iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.
Facebook will merging the two websites (into m.facebook.com) to reduce the confusion and to also make it easier to develop and rollout new features.
Lee Byron, Head of Mobile Products at Facebook explains that the problems with their earlier approach:
We were limited by the lowest common denominator for each site. We couldn't use JavaScript and had device specific file size limitations on m.facebook.com. Supporting a wide array of touch phones of varying quality on touch.facebook.com limited our ability to use modern CSS and JavaScript APIs. Every time we launched a new feature, we had to build it multiple times across different code bases: once for facebook.com, then again for m.facebook.com, touch.facebook.com, and in native applications as well. Honestly, we weren’t very good at doing this, so certain features were missing on different devices.
By unifying the websites, it will make it easier and faster for Facebook to develop new features. Bryon explains:
This mobile UI framework allows engineers to focus on building their product and not on supporting device edge cases. Rather than directly writing HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, our product engineers write XHP and use these mobile components to build new features.
So when users of smartphones like iPhone visit the new m.facebook.com website, they will see the rich touch friendly user interface while users with feature phones will see the less feature rich website.
Facebook’s native iPhone app is one of the most popular apps in the App Store but Facebook is yet to release an iPad app. It remains to be seen if Facebook will ditch its native iPhone app and focus on developing new features for the mobile web app.
You can checkout the new Facebook website for mobile by pointing your iDevice to m.facebook.com. Please note that Facebook has mentioned that the new m.facebook.com will be rolled out to everyone in the next few weeks.

iPhone Jailbreakers And Unlockers Should Avoid Upgrading To iOS 4.3
We reported yesterday that iOS 4.3 GM has already been jailbroken using PwnageTool 4.2, unofficial custom bundles, Universal Ramdisk Fixes and tetheredboot utility.
BigBoss has just warned users who want to jailbreak and unlock their iPhone to avoid upgrading to iOS 4.3 until the official jailbreaking tools are released.
BigBoss warns:
As always, I give my standard warning not to update and wait for the jailbreak release. This time, I am giving some extra caution, however.
With 4.3 comes apple’s implementation of address space layout randomization (ASLR). In short, this will mess up the way mobile substrate works. You will need a new mobile substrate in order to use your favorite tweaks such as winterboard, sbsettings, bitesms, folder enhancer, etc. So you should definitely avoid 4.3 until an "official" jailbreak is released for it.
Back in January, Joshua Hill of the Chronic Dev Team had pointed out that ASLR added in iOS 4.3 will make it more difficult to exploit userland vulnerabilities that are used to jailbreak iPhones.
Looks like Apple added ASLR into iOS 4.3. This should make things more fun!!!
ASLR is Address Space Layout Randomization. It’s designed to make userland vulnerabilities more difficult to exploit
So avoid upgrading to iOS 4.3 when it is released on March 11th or iOS 4.3 GM. This warning also applies to iPod Touch and iPad users.
iPhone Dev Team, Chronic Dev Team or iH8sn0w haven't provided any ETA on when the updated tools like PwnageTool, Greenpois0n, Sn0wbreeze etc for iOS 4.3 will be released.
As always, we’ll let you know if there are any further updates so stay tuned here at Mobile world.

Apple Announces iPad 2: A5 Dual Core, Dual Cameras, Thinner — On Sale March 11
Some rumors appeared to be true, Apple did announce an Second-Generation iPad — iPad 2. The iPad 2 features an Apple A5 dual-core processor, improved graphics, dual cameras (front and rear) and it’s 33% thinner and up to 15% lighter.
With more than 15 million iPads sold, iPad has defined an entirely new category of mobile devices, said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. While others have been scrambling to copy the first generation iPad, we’re launching iPad 2, which moves the bar far ahead of the competition and will likely cause them to go back to the drawing boards yet again.
The iPad 2 will be capable of making FaceTime calls with other FaceTime-capable devices. The rear-facing camera can capture 720p HD video. Despite its slimmer design, the iPad 2 will have the same battery life as the first generation of 10 hours and 30 days of stand-by time.
The 3G models, will be compatible with GSM network such as AT&T and the other will be compatible with Verizon’s CDMA network. You will have to choose if you want Verizon or AT&T as the 3G model can only work with one or the other. The versions compatible with Verizon’s network will be sold in the U.S. only.
In addtion, Apple has designed new accessories for the iPad 2, including cases called Smart Covers and an HDMI adapter. The Smart Covers will attach magnetically to the iPad 2 and will automatically wake the device when opened and put it to sleep when closed.
The iPad 2 will be available starting March 11 in the U.S. and will come in two colors: white and black. Pricing and capacities have not changed from the first generation of the iPad with the Wi-Fi models coming in at $499 for 16GB, $599 for 32GB, and $699 for 64GB. The Wi-Fi + 3G models will cost $629 for 16GB, $729 for 32GB, and $829 for 64GB.
Also, iPad 2 will run iOS 4.3, which will be released for other iOS devices on March 11.

iPad 2 Speed Test: 4x Faster Than iPad 1 (iOS 4.2.1), 1.5x Faster Than iPad 1 (iOS 4.3); 3x Faster Than Galaxy Tab
According to Apple, the new 1GHz dual-core A5 chip in iPad 2 unveiled at today’s ‘Come See What 2011 Will Be Year Of’ event is two times faster than the original iPad and also improves graphic performance by up to 9 times.
Folks at CNET UK who got a chance to get their hands on the new iPad after the event, ran a quick benchmark test to find out exactly how fast it is.
They carried out JavaScript SunSpider benchmark test to find out the real world Javascript performance on iPad 2 and compared it with the original iPad (iPad 1) and competing Android devices.
Here is what they had to report:
Incidentally, when you compare the iPad to the other devices we tested, Android phones and tablets don't come out particularly well. The Galaxy Tab is more than 3x slower than the iPad 2 in this test, and about 2x slower than the original iPad with the new software. The Google Nexus S smart phone doesn't fare too well either, at nearly 3x slower than the iPad 2.
CNET also reports that iOS 4.3 that comes pre-installed in iPad 2 is also another reason for the improved Javascript performance. Apple has ported the Nitro Javascript engine used in desktop version of Safari to iOS 4.3, which Apple claims loads Javascripts two times faster. The tests carried out by CNET also indicates that it is a lot faster:
There's really good news for iPhone 4 owners out there: when it arrives, iOS 4.3 will deliver a 2.5x speed increase in this test.
Once we'd updated the software on our iPad 1, the gap between the two devices narrowed considerably, with the iPad 2 coming out at just 1.5x faster than the iPad 1.
iOS 4.3 will be released on March 11 for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 4G, iPod Touch 3G and iPad, the same day as the launch of iPad 2.
The graph below gives a better idea:
It goes without saying that iPad 2 will be faster than the original iPad but it is always interesting to find out how much faster it really is.
